IN a way, the KM-272 is sort of a hybrid (as most modern Oval hole mandolins are). With modern string tensions, the adjustable truss rod is a welcome upgrade. This is something that the vintage versions did not have. Another modern feature is the Adjustable truss rod. Most of the original mandolins that inspired this had a 12th fret neck joint. Where the KM-272 differs from tradition is the neck joint (dovetail) that is at the 15th fret. Unlike the sunburst KM-270, on the KM-272 you can see the wood grain across the entire mandolin.Īlso like the originals, this model has a pick guard and uses the standard two piece stamped tailpiece. The finish is a very thin lacquer, with a hint of amber stain. The wood quality is surprisingly good, even though there is not a lot of flame on the maple. This is a hand-carved instrument that is not far off from an early 1900’s mandolin. The KM-272 Mandolin does a good job of pulling off the vintage oval hole mandolin thing. So we would usually compare some of the competition and weigh the pros and cons, but again, there isn’t any completion. The other quality brands that normally compete with Kentucky, do not make oval holes. One of the best mandolin values out there! The Kentucky KM-272 mandolins is a nice oval hole at a great price! While the KM-272 is a stand out mandolin, part of the reason it is possibly the best choice for an oval hole mandolin is the simple fact that there is virtually no completion until you significantly jump up in price.
